Driver killed after car crashes, ignites near Lowell

LOWELL, Mich. (WZZM) -- The driver involved in a single-car accident at the corner of Bennett and Cumberland SE near Lowell was killed Sunday morning, after their car burst into flames.

Police responded to the accident shortly before 9:30 Sunday morning. When they arrived, they say the car was fully engulfed in flames.

Investigators with the Kent County Sheriff's Department say the car, a Chrysler PT Cruiser, was traveling East on Bennett when the driver ran a stop sign at the corner of Cumberland sometime shortly before 9:00.

The car struck an embankment and flew several feet into a line of cable wiring before it came to rest in the woods behind the intersection.

Neighbors say they heard a series of nearly ten "loud popping noises" coming from the accident's direction before seeing smoke.

Movie 'Playback' films at Lowell High School

LOWELL, Mich. (WZZM)- A cast of young actors took over Lowell High School Friday to film scenes for a new thriller. 

The movie "Playback" follows a group of high school students who unlock something evil while digging into their town's infamous past.  More than 100 people from West Michigan are working on the movie as crew members and extras. 

A portion of the movie will be filmed inside WZZM 13's studios next week. 

Filming for "Playback" will wrap up at the end of the month.

The community rallies around Pink Arrow Project once again

Lowell, Mich. (WZZM) The BP Gas Station in Lowell is getting involved in the Pink Arrow III Project.  It is donating 5 cents for every gallon of gasoline sold on that day. The BP is located at 403 W. Main at the corner of Hudson Street.

The Pink Arrow Campaign is a community wide event raising money to fight breast cancer.

Another movie filmed in Lowell

(Lowell) Mich. (WZZM)Lowell High School is the setting for a new thriller movie being shot in West Michigan.  It's called Playback and filming will run through the end of September.  

Playback follows a group of high school students who dig into their towns infamous past and unwittingly unlock Evil that corrupts and destroys them.

The evil possesses victims through video playback and targets one teenager in particular.  It threatens to expose the towns deepest darkest secrets.

Part of the film will also be shot at the WZZM 13 studios. Genesis Code was also shot in Lowell and is now playing at local theaters.

 

"Playback" Cast on Take Five & Casting Notice

Grand Rapids, MI (TAKE FIVE & CO.) -- So far this summer, West Michigan has been home to a movie about 30 minute robbery, a football team ... now a horror thriller with the new movie "PLAYBACK".  The movie is produced by John Bennett and Lawrence Robbins for the New York City-based Bennett-Robbins Production LLC.

"Playback" began filming this week at the music store Beat Goes On. Production is expected to wrap at the end of September with additional locations to include East Grand Rapids, Lowell High School, and WZZM 13.

The young cast includes Toby Hemingway (Darren Aronofsky's "Black Swan" and Taylor Swift's music video for "Mine"), Alessandra Torresani (SyFy's "Caprica"), Ambyr Childers ("All My Children"), Darryl Mitchell (Fox's "Brothers), and Dearborn native Johnny Pacar ("Make It or Break It").

Lowell @ Forest Hills Central

GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM) -- Defending state champion Lowell looked for its second straight road win to start the season, with a trip to Forest Hills Central.

The Red Arrows lead 28 - 0 in the third quarter.  Gabe Dean took the ball right up the middle for an 18 yard touchdown to make the score 35 - 0 Lowell.

In the fourth quarter Lowell's Renn Osborne took the ball around the left end and barreled into the endzone to put the Red Arrows up 42 - 0.  That was the final score.

If you use the City’s orange trash bags and yard waste bags please note the following:

At the September 20, 2010 meeting, the Lowell City Council will be considering trash, recycle and yard waste services.  There is a possibility that the City may change haulers on December 1, 2010, so please do not over purchase trash and yard waste bags at this time.

A notice will be posted in the Lowell Ledger, Buyers Guide and City web page (www.ci.lowell.mi.us) if there is a change.
