Lowell, Mich. (WZZM)The City of Lowell is preparing for the future and will soon install a charging station for electric vehicles.

Greg Pierce, the General Manager of  Lowell Light and Power, says it's part of a project called ChargePoint America and is being paid for with money from a $35-million federal stimulus grant.  ChargePoint America is a national project to establishing a network of charging stations across America.

Pierce says the charge station is used by "simply plugging the cord on the station into the charge port of the electric vehicle." Pierce says,"Several key areas where 'early adopters' were expected to buy the new electric vehicles were selected around the U.S." Pierce says southern Michigan was selected from Grand Rapids to Lansing and Ann Arbor to Detroit.

The charging station will likely be located in a parking lot across from Larkins and next to the Shell Gas Station or the parking lot across the street from the Flat River Grill. Pierce says both of those sites are prime locations because meter boxes are readily available.

Pierce says the station could be installed by the end of the year, but most likely by the end of January.
