My Town Lowell: Pick the film for Sizzlin' Summer Concerts celebration

LOWELL, Mich.— What movie should grace the big screen during this year’s Sizzlin’ Summer Concerts?

That’s the question LowellArts and the Lowell Area Chamber of Commerce are asking community members.  Now through June 26, residents are encouraged to nominate their favorite film, which may be shown Aug. 22 on the Riverwalk Plaza.  The public will be asked to whittle down the nominees by voting during each concert this summer.  On July 10, the top ten films will be announced.  The public will then have another chance to vote for their favorite before the winning film is announced July 31.

The commemoration begins at 10 a.m. Monday, May 26 with a parade from the Kent County Youth Fairgrounds.  The procession will move down historic Main Street, stopping at the Veteran’s Memorial to launch a wreath into the river for veterans who lost their lives at sea.  The parade will resume on Monroe Street, heading north to Oakwood Cemetery, where the city will re-dedicate its Civil War Memorial Site, which was recently renovated for the first time in 114 years.  The site now includes a new 45-foot flag pole and flag, as well as an 1853 Civil War union naval cannon, which has been restored.

The Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War will take part in the re-dedication, which is expected to draw more than 1,000 people.  Student musicians from Lowell Schools will provide music for the event, which marks the sesquicentennial of the Civil War.
