Lowell woman gets prison for deadly DUI crash

GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM) -- A Lowell woman will serve two and a half to 15 years in prison for a drunk driving accident that killed a college student from Ada.

Marilyn Fitzgerald, 39, wept during Thursday afternoon's sentencing hearing, during which the parents of the victim, 19-year-old Caitlin Baker, addressed the court.

Baker's father told the court he and his wife had forgiven Fitzgerald, but their other children had not.

On December 15, Fitzgerald crossed the centerline on M-21 near Cumberland Dr., hitting Baker's car head on.

It took two months for prosecutors to file charges against Fitzgerald because she was injured and investigators were not sure at first who was at fault.

Fitzgerald pleaded guilty in April to a charge of operating while intoxicated - causing death.
