Ada-Lowell Theater Digitally Remastered

The Goodrich Quality Theater in Lowell, which switched from reels of film to digital within the last month, sold out their first 3-D showing, a midnight premier of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Pt. 2.

Now, the unwieldy reels several feet in diameter have been replaced by portable hard drives containing every possible version of a film, including 3-D.

North edges South in dramatic food fight finish

The North Lowell team made a exciting comeback to win the Flat River Outreach Ministries 2011 Food Fight. It was a friendly competition among all those working and living south of Main Street against all those north of Main Street. The object was to collect the most non-perishable food items.

Lowell FFA attends leadership training

After being elected in April, the 2011-2012 the Lowell FAA Chapter team has been busy attending several leadership conferences. Of the six FFA regions in Michigan, Region V covers the area from the lakeshore to Ionia and from Caledonia north to Beal City.

As the summer winds down, the FFA is busy preparing for contests and the Kent County Youth Fair. The Lowell chapter will have members competing in upcoming state livestock judging, tractor driving and dairy showmanship. The Lowell FFA is one of the largest chapters in Michigan with over 100 members.

Covered Bridge Bike Tour ready to roll July 10

The 17th annual Covered Bridge Bike Tour will pedal through the area on Sunday, July 10. It starts on the Covered Bridge Road in Fallasburg pioneer village with registration at the one-room schoolhouse.

There are several tour options ranging from 12 miles to 100 miles. The most traveled route is the 28 mile route to Ada and back. The second most popular route is the South 50, which travels along rivers and streams through beautiful farmland.

The Covered Bridge Bike Tour has grown from just a handful of registrants to 253 registrants last year.

Lowell Food Fight 2011 nearing the end

As of Saturday, July 2 the South team had a lead of 694 items with only a few days remaining in the contest. All collection buckets and barrels will be collected Friday afternoon and the large red and white barrels will be prepped for parade route locations along Main Street. The FROM the Heart Food Fight Riverwalk Parade will begin at noon.

Immediately after the parade, the Food Fight trucks will pick-up all the collection barrels and deliver the last food donations to FROM for final counting. The winner will be announced that evening at the 7pm Riverwalk concert.

Get up close and personal with the animal world when the Animal Crackers Petting Zoo visits several Kent District Library branches this summer. Children of all ages are invited to hang out with and learn about the animals from one of the largest exotic traveling petting zoos in the area. There are sure to be some great photo opportunities, so don’t forget the camera!
