Historic Ionia bridge destroyed by arson | News
LOWELL, Mich. (WZZM)- Ionia County Sheriff's Department says on Sunday morning, crews were dispatched to the Whites Bridge located on Whites Bridge Road north of Richmond Road.
It was reported that the wooden bridge was on fire. When emergency crews arrived, the entire bridge had already fallen into the river as a result of the fire.
Ionia County Central Dispatch, Belding Fire Department and the Ionia County Road Commission were called out to assist.
Some local historians and community members are worried it will not be rebuilt.
"People were just so emotional about it because it's just a historic part of what we have out here," says Alan Rumbaugh with the Fallasburg Historical Society. "Between that and our Fallasburg Bridge, they were just two magnificent structures and we're very concerned it will not be rebuilt, it's very expensive to do them.
"I think the people that are around here and the people part of the village will do everything they can to try to get some support to make it historic again," says Rumbaugh. "It would be wonderful to do that."
Anyone with information into the arson is asked to contact the Ionia County Sheriff's Office at (616) 527-5737 or Silent Observer at (616) 527-0107.
