Safety improvements to Main Street bridge moving forward

LOWELL, Mich. (WZZM) The Michigan Department of Transportation is moving forward with plans to install metal rods inside decorative spaces on new bridge completed last year on Main Street.

The city contacted MDOT about safety concerns when a mother notified officials a small child could easily fit through the gaps.  MDOT had proposed adding a mesh screen or drilling holes into the top of the railing to add steal pipes.  HDC Commission suggested pressure fitting the rods rather than drill through the top of the railing.  The plan was also approved by the city commission.

It's expected the state will move forward with changes as soon as possible.
