Tornado sirens warn Lowell residents of potential danger

LOWELL, Mich. (WZZM) The Tornado sirens started sounding in Downtown Lowell early Tuesday evening after the National Weather Service issued a Tornado warning for parts of Kent and Ionia County.

The Lowell Historic District Commission was nearing the end of the meeting when the sirens sounded.  The sirens continued to sound for about a half hour, but it was my observation that very few people decided to take cover. The library remained open and people continued to come and go from downtown businesses.

When a tornado warning is issued, it is recommended that people take cover immediately in a basement or the lowest level of the building they are in. While tornados are fairly rare they can develop with little warning.  Here are some Tornado Warning tips from the FEMA.
