Celebrate National Get Outdoors Day

Celebrate National Get Outdoors Day

Yes, it may be cloudy out right now but come this afternoon the sun should be peeking out.  What should you do on a day like today?  How about grab the family and celebrate National Get Outdoors Day?  National Get Outdoors Day was launched June 14, 2008 and has been an annual event ever since.  It is also an extension of the Get Outdoors USA! campaign which encourages Americans, especially the youth, to seek out healthy, active outdoor lives.

In today's world, children are connected to technology more then ever.  Whether it be from video games, computers, ipods or cell phones it's time to bring the youth back to nature.  Back to the days where we spent the summers riding our bikes around the neighborhood till the street lights came on.  Spending a Saturday afternoon fishing with grandpa or taking a morning hike with mom.

Lowell heats up with community Zumba

The Lowell Riverwalk was the hottest place in town Monday evening. Lowell Community Wellness kicked off Zumba on the River with Nikki Snyder as part of 100 Miles in 100 Days event.

More than 45 people gathered on the Riverwalk for a free Zumba class to get moving and shaking to a Latin beat. Nikki Snyder led the group with her usual high energy level and encouraging smile.

Lowell Community Wellness is sponsoring Zumba classes each Monday night from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. throughout the summer, except for July 4th. The classes are part of the 100 Miles in 100 Days event and are free to the entire community.

The 100 Miles event is designed to encourage residents of the Lowell Area School district to get moving and keep moving all summer long as part of a healthy lifestyle.  Individuals and teams will turn in their steps walked each week and prizes will be awarded for top team and individual.

Rescue on the Flat

Rescue on the Flat

It was supposed to be a fun day at the Flat River trying out the new remote control boat Cole Weston got for his birthday.  Instead it turned out to be another river rescue several days after a pontoon overturned on the same river.  Cole and his dad Case just put the toy in the water when 30-seconds out into the river the boat stopped working.  "It just quit" said Case, "then the wind kicked up and took it and started blowing it up river!"  Luckily, I happened to be out in our pontoon with my wife and son when Case flagged me down.  Case and Cole jumped on board and we were able to weave in between the shallows and rescue the wayward jet ski before it reached Belding.

LOWELL, Mich. (WZZM) It's been nearly a year since Lowell suddenly lost a familiar face in town.  Jim Wood, 'Woody', passed away suddenly last June.  Anyone travelling along Alden Nash near I-96 would see Woody parked along side the road selling golf clubs. Friends say it was his passion.

This year, in Woody's honor, the community is planning Woody's 'Im So Fantastic' Golf Classic at Deer Run Golf Club. The event is scheduled for Saturday June 25th.  It costs $60.00 a person  and includes 18 holes of golf , cart, lunch, dinner, t-shirt and various other prizes.

People who don't golf are also encouraged to attend the dinner for $15.00 per person.
