Expect traffic tie-ups as crews work on new signals

LOWELL, Mich. – New traffic lights in downtown Lowell are leading some driving detours.

The Michigan Department of Transportation says there will be intermittent lane closures on Main Street at Hudson Street as crews work on the turn signals.  The work will run through 3 p.m. Friday and start up again Monday, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The final traffic pole for the new lights was installed this week.  The city’s Facebook page says the lights were a long time coming, and should lead to shorter waits at the intersection.

Lowell Airport improvements get the green light

Lowell Airport improvements get the green light

LOWELL, Mich.—Lowell Airport is moving forward with improvements to one of its three runways.

Airport Manager Jim Sowle says work on repairing cracks in the runway will likely begin mid-August.  The $13,000 project is being funded by revenue from hangar rentals at the airport.  The Lowell City Council approved the contract work during its meeting July 15.

Sowle says the runway was installed about 20 years ago and the repairs should help prevent issues with aircraft take-offs and landings.  Lowell Airport handles about 20,000 take-offs and landings each year.

Sowle says officials are working on improving the airport so it can be promoted from basic to general utility status. Sowle says the status change will give the airport more opportunities for state funding.  However, Sowle says it could take another three to four years to reach their goal.
